Victoria Mboko’s 2026 grass-court season has suffered a major setback following a knee injury during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The 19-year-old Canadian, currently ranked World No. 9, fell awkwardly on the grass at the Queen’s Club in West Kensington, London.

After receiving medical attention on the court, Mboko reported that she had “no stability right now” in her knee, leading to an emotional retirement from the match.

The injury has significant implications for the HSBC Championships doubles draw, where Victoria Mboko had partnered with 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams. The pair had successfully navigated their opening round on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.

However, Mboko’s physical condition reportedly forces their withdrawal ahead of a scheduled quarter-final against Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund.

The incident occurred as Mboko attempted to change direction during the second set of her match against Pliskova. While the young star was visibly upset, Pliskova offered support by bringing a towel to her opponent on the floor. Mboko later offered an apology to the former world number one as she retired.

This disruption comes just days after the 44-year-old Serena Williams announced her return to the WTA Tour on Monday, June 8, 2026, after nearly four years away from the sport.

Annabel Croft and Naomi Broady react to grass-court injury

Former British number one Annabel Croft described the event as a “heartbreaker,” noting the specific challenges of the surface. Croft explained that recent rain and moisture on fresh green grass often make it difficult for the courts to harden, leading to classic injuries where a player’s legs move in different directions.

Such incidents can quickly alter the momentum of a tournament, much like how a technical glitch or weather shift can disrupt a major sporting schedule.

Naomi Broady, during the BBC’s coverage of the event, observed that the fall appeared to cause a “big strain right through the inside of that knee.” Broady expressed hope that the issue was merely the shock of the fall rather than a long-term injury.

The concern among commentators remains high as players look toward the upcoming Wimbledon Championships. Decisions made regarding health and recovery at this stage are as critical as a career-defining choice faced by veteran athletes in other global sports.

Anne Keothavong confirmed that Serena Williams was in the player lounge with coach Rennae Stubbs when the fall happened. According to Keothavong, everyone in the lounge was “really shocked” by the incident. While Williams’ run at Queen’s Club appears to be over, she is already scheduled to compete in Berlin next week alongside Karolina Muchova, ensuring her comeback continues regardless of the outcome in London.

Victoria Mboko’s history of physical setbacks in 2026

The knee injury is the latest in a series of health hurdles for Victoria Mboko this year. On January 21, 2026, she suffered a hyperextension in Adelaide, which was categorized as a minor setback. Later, on March 29, 2026, she was forced to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup.

That decision followed the extraction of all four of her wisdom teeth after she experienced recurring dental pain.

These interruptions follow a standout 2025 season where the Canadian secured her maiden WTA title in Montreal. On August 8, 2025, she defeated Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the final, though she subsequently had to pull out of the Cincinnati Open to address a wrist injury sustained during that match.

For now, the tennis community monitors her recovery with the same intensity seen when major sports news updates break regarding international tournaments.

Victoria Mboko had expressed great excitement about the partnership with Williams, noting on social media that it was an honor to share the court with the American legend. While the singles retirement is confirmed, the official status of her Wimbledon participation remains uncertain. Serena Williams is expected to check on her partner’s welfare before moving on to her next scheduled tournament in Germany.
