Denny Hamlin secured his 63rd career NASCAR Cup Series victory at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, June 7, 2026, tying the late Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time wins list. Driving the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, Hamlin crossed the finish line 11.

1 seconds ahead of the field to claim his third win of the 2026 season. The triumph carried heavy emotional weight, coming just two weeks after Busch, Hamlin’s former teammate, passed away at the age of 41.

The victory led a dominant 1-2-3 finish for Toyota, with Erik Jones finishing second and Bubba Wallace taking third. For Hamlin, the milestone serves as a tribute to Kyle Busch, with whom he shared the Joe Gibbs Racing stable for nearly 15 years between 2008 and 2022.

During his post-race burnout, Hamlin honored his former colleague by carrying a No. 18 flag, the number Busch famously drove for the organization.

Hamlin’s achievement at Michigan marks his fourth career win at the 2-mile track and his 21st top-10 finish in 36 starts at the venue. He has now competed in 736 Cup Series races, mirroring the 63-win total achieved by Busch during his career.

This performance keeps him firmly in the hunt for the regular-season title, as latest sport news updates indicate he now trails points leader Tyler Reddick by 51 points.

Overcoming starting penalties and early race spins

Hamlin’s path to the winner’s circle required a massive recovery effort after he was forced to start from the rear of the field. Although he had qualified on the pole, his No. 11 Toyota required repairs following a cut tire during practice.

This relocation to the back put him at an immediate disadvantage on a day defined by high attrition and a record number of cautions for a Cup race at Michigan.

The difficulty increased during the first half of the race when Hamlin spun as part of a restart crash. Despite the setback, he managed to avoid terminal damage and remained in contention as the field thinned. Navigating such chaos requires the same level of technical precision seen when com/gerwyn-price-beats-luke-littler-berlin-darts-recap-2026″>Gerwyn Price beats Luke Littler in high-pressure sporting environments, where early mistakes must be countered by immediate tactical resets.

While Hamlin worked his way forward, others found the Michigan surface less forgiving. On Lap 83, the race’s complexion shifted when Carson Hocevar got into the back of John Hunter Nemechek. This triggered a chain-reaction pileup that collected nine cars and destroyed the No. 45 Toyota of Tyler Reddick, ending his streak of top-15 finishes and handing him his first DNF of 2026.

A record-breaking afternoon of cautions and crashes

The final stage was interrupted by a 20-minute red flag following a violent collision between Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell. Both drivers were uninjured, but the impacts were severe enough to require extensive wall repairs. Another large incident soon followed when a push from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. sent a pack of cars into each other, eliminating several drivers including Shane van Gisbergen and McDowell.

Hamlin made his decisive move for the lead with 38 laps remaining. In a bold three-wide maneuver, he swept past Daniel Suarez and Carson Hocevar to take control of the race. Once in the lead, Hamlin began pulling away from the pack.

By Lap 188, his lead had grown to 7 seconds, eventually expanding to over 11 seconds by the time he reached the checkered flag.

The level of focus required to manage such a gap is a testament to Hamlin’s veteran experience. Much like when a top competitor such as Makhachev targets two-division glory, Hamlin demonstrated that he could balance the technical demands of the car with the strategic needs of a long-run finish. His margin of victory was the largest of the afternoon.

Final race results and championship outlook

In the post-race ceremonies, Hamlin was visibly moved by the significance of the date and the person he had just tied in the record books. “It was rough for the NASCAR family, we lost a lot of people,” Hamlin said, also referencing the passing of Hall of Famer Ned Jarrett.

He noted that he does not take the opportunity to strap into the car every week for granted.

The top 10 finishers at Michigan were as follows:

  • 1st: Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing)
  • 2nd: Erik Jones (Legacy Motor Club)
  • 3rd: Bubba Wallace (23XI Racing)
  • 4th: Kyle Larson (Hendrick Motorsports)
  • 5th: Carson Hocevar (Spire Motorsports)
  • 6th: Daniel Suarez (Trackhouse Racing)
  • 7th: Joey Logano (Team Penske)
  • 8th: Ryan Blaney (Team Penske)
  • 9th: Chris Buescher (RFK Racing)
  • 10th: Chase Briscoe (Joe Gibbs Racing)

While Hamlin celebrated, it was a forgettable outing for rookie Connor Zilisch, who finished 37th after spinning twice in the first ten laps. The series now moves forward with the playoff race intensifying, as Hamlin’s third win of the year solidifies his position as a primary challenger for the 2026 title.

His ability to honor Kyle Busch’s legacy while furthering his own remains the story of the weekend.
