England Women will face Sri Lanka Women at Edgbaston Stadium on Friday, June 12, 2026, to officially open the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The 18:30 BST fixture in Birmingham marks the start of a 24-day tournament featuring 12 competing nations.

As the host side prepares for the opening toss, organizers have confirmed that gates will open 120 minutes before the start of play to accommodate fans attending the high-profile curtain-raiser.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled an elaborate opening ceremony to precede the first ball. Cast members from the London West End production of Wicked are set to perform live on the Edgbaston outfield. This entertainment serves as a prelude to a competition that Nat Sciver-Brunt, England captain, believes could represent a watershed moment for the global game.

Sciver-Brunt expressed her excitement about the home tournament, stating that while all World Cups are special, this edition “already feels different” and holds “the potential to be truly game-changing.” She described the tournament as a “brilliant opportunity to inspire young people” while playing for the sport’s biggest prize on home soil.

The demand for tickets has been high, with priority seats for the final at Lord’s selling out within just 24 hours of release.

Edgbaston match day procedures and spectator policies

Fans attending the opening match should prepare for a cashless experience, as Edgbaston Stadium now only accepts card payments at all bars and catering units. While spectators are permitted to bring their own food and drink into the 25,000-capacity venue, stadium policy strictly prohibits alcohol and glass bottles.

These measures are part of the broader logistics for the 18:30 BST start, which sees the match played under evening floodlights.

General admission tickets for the opener were made available from £20, though prices rose for more exclusive viewing areas. The Seat Unique Terrace offered seats from £195, while the Powerplay Lounge in The Warwickshire Suite was priced at $329.52 per person.

Such price points reflect the growing commercial scale of women’s sports, similar to the major investments seen when Manchester United secure £100m deals to reshape their professional rosters.

Broadcast details and global viewing times

UK supporters can follow every delivery of the tournament via Sky Sports. For the massive cricket-watching audience in India, Star Sports will provide the television broadcast while JioHotstar handles the live-streaming service. The 18:30 BST start time in Birmingham translates to 5:30 PM GMT, ensuring the match reaches a global audience during prime viewing hours in multiple time zones.

Tournament expectations and conditions in Birmingham

England Women enter the opening encounter as heavy favorites with match odds of approximately 1.25, suggesting an 80% win probability. Sri Lanka Women are considered the underdogs at 3.75, representing an implied win probability of roughly 27%. Despite the odds, opening matches often provide unique challenges as teams adjust to the tournament atmosphere and pitch conditions.

Evening temperatures at Edgbaston are expected to hover between 18-21°C during play. Data from previous evening fixtures at the venue suggest that a total in the 150-170 range is considered par for a Women’s T20 match. Achieving peak performance in these conditions requires deep technical preparation, much like how Luke Littler leads technical drills for his own national teammates to ensure precision under pressure.

The 12-team tournament will move quickly through several historical venues, including Headingley, Old Trafford, and the Hampshire Bowl. Following the Friday night opener, Edgbaston will host a double-header weekend, including a fixture between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on Sunday, June 14. All teams in the draw are ultimately chasing the title currently held by New Zealand, who won the previous trophy.

Host venues and the path to the London final

The 2026 World Cup is spread across 24 days, utilizing the best facilities in England and Wales. While Birmingham hosts the opener, the knockout stages will shift toward the capital late in the tournament. The Oval in London has been selected to host the semi-finals, while the final will take place at the historic Lord’s ground.

For the England squad, the pressure of a home tournament is high, but the schedule provides a clear roadmap for success. Unlike the speculative nature of football news, such as reports that Liverpool may allow Mohamed Salah to depart on a free transfer, the cricket calendar is firmly set.

The hosts know that a strong performance against Sri Lanka is the first step toward a potential trophy lift in London.
