The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially confirmed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain on Saturday, marking a major leadership transition following the team’s successful T20 World Cup defense. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the decision at a press conference in Mumbai on June 6, 2026, revealing that Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped from the squad entirely for upcoming assignments.

The selection committee also handed a maiden senior call-up to 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, signaling a definitive shift toward youth as the selectors look toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The removal of Suryakumar Yadav comes just months after he led India to a successful defense of the T20 World Cup trophy in March. Despite that victory, the 35-year-old has struggled with a prolonged dip in form and a suspected wrist injury. His recent statistics highlight the decline; he managed just 270 runs across 13 matches in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, averaging 20.76. These struggles were also evident in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he posted 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72.

Shreyas Iyer returns to the T20I fold as the leader for the next two-year cycle. The 31-year-old has not played a T20I since December 2023, largely due to a crowded middle order. However, his captaincy resume is substantial. He led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in 2024 and guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to their first IPL final in 11 years in 2025. His personal form has remained strong, evidenced by his 498 runs in the 2026 IPL season, a campaign that followed a 2025 season where he scored 604 runs.

Selection committee prioritizes long-term strategy for 2028 Olympics

Ajit Agarkar emphasized that the decision to move on from Suryakumar Yadav was rooted in strategic planning. With the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympic debut of cricket approaching, the selectors noted that Suryakumar will be 38 before the next T20 World Cup in 2028. The inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the clearest evidence of this youth-first approach. If Sooryavanshi makes his debut in Ireland or England, he will become the first India player to make his international debut before turning 16.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dominated the 2026 IPL season, amassing 776 runs and hitting 72 sixes with a strike rate of 237.30. Before joining the senior squad in Belfast, the teenager is scheduled to represent India A in a tri-series in Sri Lanka starting June 9. This focus on young talent mirrors other sporting shifts, such as how teenager Littler leads technical drills for his teammates in professional darts.

The squad overhaul also sees Tilak Varma promoted to vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel. This marks the third T20 vice-captaincy change for India in eight months. While senior mainstays Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are being rested for the European tour, several World Cup winners including Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav have been left out to make room for Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Prince Yadav.

Upcoming T20I schedule for Shreyas Iyer and the new squad

The first test for Shreyas Iyer’s leadership begins in Ireland with a two-match series in Belfast on June 26 and 28. These fixtures are followed by a five-match series in England from July 1 to 11. The selectors are eager to see how the new middle-order configuration performs without the safety net of their former captain.

The tour will be a critical period for several players looking to secure spots for the Asian Games in Japan this September. com/latest-sport-news-updates-miami-open-aintree-world-cup/”>latest sport news updates regarding elite international teams.

In addition to the senior team changes, the BCCI named Dhruv Jurel as the captain of an India A squad for four-day matches against Sri Lanka A. This squad includes B Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal, with Padikkal serving as the vice-captain (vc) for the tour. The inclusion of Auqib Nabi, whose 60 wickets at 12.56 led Jammu & Kashmir to a historic maiden Ranji Trophy title, further highlights the focus on domestic performers.

India’s T20I squad for the tours of Ireland and England includes:

* Shreyas Iyer (capt)
* Tilak Varma (vc)
* Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
* Abhishek Sharma
* Sanju Samson
* Ishan Kishan
* Shivam Dube
* Nitish Kumar Reddy
* Axar Patel
* Washington Sundar
* Varun Chakravarthy
* Ravi Bishnoi
* Mohammed Siraj
* Harshit Rana
* Arshdeep Singh
* Prince Yadav

The first T20I is scheduled for June 26 in Belfast. It will be the first time since late 2023 that Shreyas Iyer steps onto the T20I pitch. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if this selection policy, seeking the “best for the next two-year cycle,” pays dividends or if the absence of Suryakumar Yadav leaves a void in the middle order. Latest sport news updates suggest India is fully committed to this generational shift.
