Didier Deschamps, the France national team coach, has confirmed that Arsenal defender William Saliba is fit and available for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite persistent concerns regarding a recurring back injury, medical examinations conducted on Monday, June 1, yielded positive results. These scans effectively dismissed initial fears that the center-back could be sidelined for several weeks or require immediate surgery.

The update provides clarity for Les Bleus as they prepare for their Group I opening fixture against Senegal in New Jersey on June 16. While William Saliba is available for selection, Didier Deschamps confirmed he will not feature in the friendly against Northern Ireland on June 8.

This decision is part of a deliberate management strategy to protect the defender ahead of the tournament’s start on June 12.

William Saliba has been managing the back issue for several weeks, a condition that reportedly worsened during the UEFA Champions League final in May. The defender played 120 minutes in Arsenal’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before joining the national camp. This high-intensity workload led to “genuine concern” from reporters like Santi Aouna, though the latest medical feedback has been more optimistic.

Managing player fatigue and high-stakes injury risks

Coach Didier Deschamps emphasized that the medical staff is monitoring William Saliba based on how the player feels during training sessions. “It’s something he’s had for several weeks, and it hasn’t prevented him from playing every match with Arsenal,” Didier Deschamps told reporters. The coach noted that if the competitive matches began today, the defender would be ready to participate.

The situation mirrors broader tactical shifts seen in European football, such as when Manchester United secure defensive deals to prepare for high-pressure campaigns. For France, maintaining the health of their core defensive partnership—expected to feature William Saliba alongside Dayot Upamecano—is the primary focus during these final training days. Other central options in the 26-man squad include Ibrahima Konate and Jules Kounde.

Mental recovery has also been a factor for the Arsenal star following the Champions League final loss. Didier Deschamps observed that while five other players from that final returned with smiles after celebrated victories, William Saliba found the transition more difficult. This period of “management” is intended to help the player recover both physically and mentally before flying to the United States.

Squad availability and the road to New Jersey

While William Saliba sits out the Northern Ireland friendly, Ousmane Dembélé is expected to return to the starting lineup. The winger has recovered from the fatigue of the Champions League final and is part of a fully available 26-man squad.

This depth is vital as France looks toward a group that includes Senegal, Iran, and Norway in the latest world cup updates from the French camp.

Reports suggest that although William Saliba can play through the World Cup, he may require surgery once the tournament concludes. Arsenal officials are reportedly aware that a post-tournament procedure could cause him to miss the start of the next domestic campaign. For now, the priority remains the international stage and France’s bid for another global title.

The French medical team has developed a conservative treatment plan to manage the player’s back in the humid conditions expected in North America. By opting not to play him in today’s friendly, Didier Deschamps is prioritizing longevity over immediate match minutes. This careful approach ensures that France’s most consistent defender from the 2025/26 season is ready for the high-stakes opener in New Jersey.
