Louis Deletraz secured pole position for Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, leading a front-row lockout for the manufacturer in the GTP class. The Swiss driver, piloting the #40 Cadillac V-Series.R, topped the timing sheets during the qualifying session to place his team at the head of the grid for the upcoming IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship event. The session highlighted Cadillac’s strong performance on the historic California road course, with Jack Aitken securing the second starting position in the #31 Whelen Cadillac. This result provides a significant boost for Wayne Taylor Racing, which has worked to refine the V-Series.R’s performance against challenges from rival manufacturers. Much like Oscar Piastri finding pace in difficult conditions during practice sessions earlier this year, Deletraz’s ability to maximize his machinery at the right moment proved to be the difference. Behind the leading Cadillacs, the competition remained close. Nick Yelloly moved the #93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing entry into the second row, followed by Dries Vanthoor in the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8. While the GTP class drew the most attention, the GTD Pro and GTD categories also delivered compelling battles, with Lexus and Ferrari making a strong impact on the 11-turn layout.

Cadillac’s Strategic Advantage in GTP Qualifying

Deletraz took control of the qualifying window in the final stages, delivering a lap that remained unchallenged as time expired. Team representatives indicated that the result was a reward for the technical staff and mechanics who have sought incremental gains since the start of the season. The front-row lockout puts Cadillac in a favorable position, though the presence of the Meyer Shank Racing Acura in the top three suggests a narrow gap between the leading teams. Tom Blomqvist finished among the top five in the second Acura, while Ross Gunn placed the Aston Martin THOR Team entry just behind the lead pack. With the field tightly grouped, the initial run down to the iconic Corkscrew is expected to be a high-stakes moment for the GTP entries.

Lexus and BMW Duel for GTD Pro Superiority

In the GTD Pro category, Jack Hawksworth maintained his reputation for qualifying excellence. Driving the #14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3, the Briton secured another pole to add to his career tally. This particular result at Laguna Seca underlines his consistency across various North American venues. The battle for the remaining front-row spot in GTD Pro was impacted by track limit decisions. Neil Verhagen faced challenges with lap times being affected by track boundaries but managed to place the Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO on the outside of the front row. Christopher Mies finished close behind for Ford Racing, signaling that the Mustang remains a competitive threat in the class. Those following technical growth in other disciplines might see this climb as similar to how Luke Littler has taken a lead in technical drills, demonstrating how preparation dictates results in high-pressure environments.

Ferrari Secures Top Spot in GTD Class

The GTD class provided a major storyline as Lorenzo Patrese claimed pole for Conquest Racing. Driving the #34 Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO, Patrese secured a primary starting position that ended a long wait for the team. The margin was reportedly very slim, with Danny Formal in the Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan nearly matching the top time. Formal’s session was interrupted by technical difficulties. While attempting to improve his position late in the session, the Lamborghini driver reportedly faced a fuel-related issue that forced him to return to the pits. Despite this, his high starting position keeps Wayne Taylor Racing in contention for successes across multiple classes. Current points leader Dude Barrichello secured a top-three start for the Heart of Racing Team in his Aston Martin Vantage.

Race Outlook and Strategy Considerations

As teams move toward the main event, the focus shifts to tire management and fuel strategy. The surface at Laguna Seca is known for being abrasive, and preserving tires will likely be the deciding factor over the full race distance. While Cadillac has the advantage of starting at the front, Acura and BMW have shown competitive pace in previous long-run simulations. The variety of manufacturers at the front of the GT classes suggests an unpredictable contest. Strategy calls from the pit wall will be crucial, particularly if full-course cautions occur. The intensity of this preparation mirrors the pressure seen when Israel Adesanya prepares for a main event, where precision is required to avoid a costly error. All eyes will be on the grid to see if Deletraz can convert his qualifying performance into a victory.
