Andrea Petkovic, the former world No. 9 and 2014 French Open semifinalist, revealed she “refused” to lead a television broadcast with news of Serena Williams returning to professional tennis while the French Open was still underway.

Speaking on the “Becker Petkovic” show, the German broadcaster explained that she prioritized the active competitors at Roland Garros over a doubles announcement for a WTA 500 event. Andrea Petkovic informed the American TV station she was hosting for that the players competing in the Paris heat deserved the primary spotlight.

Serena Williams officially announced her return to professional tennis on June 1, 2026, confirming she would appear at the Queen’s Club Championships in London. Before this announcement, the 23-time Grand Slam champion had not played competitively since her third-round defeat at the 2022 US Open.

While the return of such a legendary figure is a major media draw, Andrea Petkovic argued that leading with a doubles entry at a smaller tournament while a major championship was in progress felt wrong. Similar debates often arise in other sports regarding media focus, such as during heavily scrutinized com/seattle-sports-radio-analysis-brock-salk-2026-trends/”>Seattle sports radio analysis or major team transitions.

Andrea Petkovic was firm in her stance, stating she told producers she would not open the show with a comeback story during a Grand Slam. “Serena is an absolute legend, but while a major is underway, I’m not opening the show with that,” Andrea Petkovic said.

She emphasized her desire to honor the “players who are working their butts off” in extreme conditions. This decision reflects her belief that the integrity of an ongoing major should take precedence over news of an exhibition-style return in a different city.

Boris Becker supports Petkovic over media coverage imbalance

Commentator Boris Becker supported Andrea Petkovic’s view, criticizing how major networks handled the news cycle. Boris Becker noted that CNN often dedicated ten minutes of airtime to Serena Williams’ training or her doubles matches while providing only five minutes of coverage for Roland Garros.

This perceived imbalance prompted Andrea Petkovic to take a stand during her hosting duties, ensuring the French Open remained the lead story for her broadcast.

The German broadcaster clarified that her refusal was not a slight against Serena Williams’ status as an athlete. She acknowledged that the stadium at the Queen’s Club was “sold out down to the last seat” for Serena Williams’ first match back.

However, Andrea Petkovic maintained that when a Grand Slam becomes less important than a doubles comeback in the eyes of the media, it does a disservice to the athletes currently fighting for a major title.

Anti-doping protocols suggest serious competitive intent for Williams

Petkovic also provided a deeper look into what this return indicates for the 44-year-old Serena Williams. She highlighted that Serena Williams re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) anti-doping testing pool in December 2025. This move is a mandatory requirement for any player returning to professional competition. Just as com/gerwyn-price-beats-luke-littler-berlin-darts-recap-2026/”>Gerwyn Price beats Luke Littler in high-stakes environments, returning to the professional circuit requires immense commitment and formal adherence to strict regulations.

In her analysis, Andrea Petkovic suggested that no athlete voluntarily subjects themselves to the intrusive ITIA protocols just to play doubles. “They usually come at five in the morning, just to f— with you,” she remarked.

Based on this, Petkovic believes Serena Williams may eventually target a singles return, despite the legend’s own comments in London on June 8, where she claimed she had no plans for a singles career due to the extra training required.

Serena Williams won her opening doubles match at Queen’s in straight sets, looking “fantastic” while serving at 120 miles per hour, according to Petkovic. However, the partnership with Victoria Mboko ended prematurely after Victoria Mboko suffered an injury during a singles match. This injury forced the pair to withdraw from the tournament earlier than planned.

Despite this setback, the news of the return continues to dominate conversations as the tour moves toward the grass season.

Serena Williams prepares for Berlin Open and Wimbledon

The 23-time Grand Slam winner is now scheduled to compete at the Berlin Open, which begins on Monday, June 15, 2026. She is set to play alongside Karolina Muchova of Czechia.

Petkovic admitted that while she wouldn’t lead a show with the news during the French Open, Serena Williams will naturally become the center of attention as the tour moves toward the All England Club. Wimbledon is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 29, 2026.

The tennis world remains divided on the impact of this comeback, evidenced by mixed fan reactions ranging from excitement to claims of “stealing opportunities” from younger talent. For Andrea Petkovic, the focus remains on the tournament currently in play and the merit of those competing.

As the Berlin Open kicks off, the focus will stay on whether Serena Williams can translate her doubles form into a sustainable run and if her body can handle the rigors of professional play at age 44.
