McLaren driver Lando Norris topped the second free practice (FP2) session for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Friday, June 12, 2026, yet expressed clear frustration with his car’s performance. The British driver, who currently sits 98 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, clocked a 1:15.426 lap to lead the field.

Despite the result, Lando Norris admitted there are “still things I’m not happy with” as he looks to rebound from a series of reliability-induced retirements.

The FP2 session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya saw Lando Norris edge out George Russell of Mercedes by a razor-thin margin of 0.009 seconds. Teammate Oscar Piastri secured the third-fastest time, finishing 0.057 seconds back, as McLaren demonstrated improved pace following recent struggles in Canada and Monaco. The session’s top five was rounded out by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Lando Norris arrived in Spain desperate for a clean weekend after matching his 2025 form in Barcelona. His current campaign has been hindered by three retirements in just six races, primarily due to reliability issues with the Mercedes power unit in his MCL40. These mechanical failures have made it difficult for the McLaren team to build momentum or refine the car’s setup during race weekends.

High track temperatures and Pirelli tyre degradation challenges

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya presented a starkly different environment compared to the tight street circuits of Montreal and Monte Carlo. Higher temperatures on Friday combined with a softer tyre selection — one step lower in the Pirelli range than used in 2025 — led to significant degradation.

Drivers reported a noticeable loss of grip after only a few laps, suggesting a tactical shift toward two-stop race strategies for Sunday.

Lando Norris noted that the car was operating in a “different regime” due to the high-speed, flowing nature of the Spanish track. While Oscar Piastri led a disrupted session at Suzuka under different conditions earlier this year, both McLaren drivers proved they could adapt quickly to the 4.657-kilometer layout.

However, the unpredictability of the wind and heat meant that few drivers in the paddock felt fully comfortable during their long-run simulations.

Pirelli’s decision to bring softer compounds was intended to increase strategic variation, and early data suggests the mission has been successful. Lando Norris cautioned that Friday times can be deceptive given the unknown fuel loads and engine modes used by rivals.

He emphasized that while the car is “working in a better place” than in recent weeks, the team must work hard overnight to maximize the package for qualifying.

Lando Norris reflects on difficult championship defense

The reigning world champion has faced an uphill battle in 2026, describing his current title defense as “pretty impossible” for the time being. Lando Norris admitted that the inability to finish the last two Grands Prix has been painful for both him and the McLaren squad.

He noted that without reliability, it is impossible to build confidence or effectively test new components during a race weekend.

The internal battle at McLaren remains close, with Oscar Piastri showing strong pace on the medium rubber while Lando Norris focused on the softs. Just as recent sport news updates have tracked shifting leads in other major sports, the F1 hierarchy remains fluid heading into Saturday.

Mercedes appears to be a direct threat, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli flanking the McLaren pair in the timing sheets.

Lando Norris remains realistic about his chances of closing the 98-point gap to Kimi Antonelli. He acknowledged that while he knows the Barcelona track better than perhaps any other circuit, the conditions make it difficult to feel “amazing” behind the wheel. The focus for the Woking team now shifts to resolving the specific balance issues highlighted by their lead driver before the final practice session.

Improving reliability remains the priority for McLaren

For McLaren, the primary goal for the remainder of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is ensuring both cars reach the checkered flag. Lando Norris has been vocal about the team’s need to address the consistency of the MCL40.

He stated that while the car is clearly “working better” in Spain, it has yet to reach the desired performance ceiling required to fight for wins and podiums consistently.

Tonight’s data analysis will be critical for the team to understand the high levels of tyre wear seen during FP2. If McLaren can translate their single-lap speed into a durable race setup, Lando Norris may yet find a way to reignite his season.

For now, the champion is keeping expectations in check, focusing on the marginal gains needed to improve a car he is not yet fully happy with.
