The 2026 Men’s College World Series (MCWS) is into its first weekend of high-stakes baseball at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, with established powers and tournament debutants clashing for a spot in the national championship series.

Running through Monday, June 22, the double-elimination bracket has already delivered substantial drama, including a dominant opening by Oklahoma and a historic first-ever appearance by No. 16 West Virginia. The field is notably heavy with Southeastern Conference (SEC) talent, as five of the eight participating programs hail from the conference.

West Virginia opened the tournament on Friday, June 12, with a 7-5 victory over the Troy Trojans. The Mountaineers’ third baseman Tyrus Hall provided the offensive spark, driving in four runs. Meanwhile, right-hander Ian Korn anchored the defense out of the bullpen, striking out four while allowing just one run over six innings of work.

The victory marks a significant milestone for West Virginia in their first CWS appearance, occurring just as Mountaineers fans celebrate a historic postseason run alongside new university giving initiatives.

In the second half of Friday’s slate, No. 5 North Carolina secured a 6-2 win against the Ole Miss Rebels. The Tar Heels took control late, scoring all six of their runs from the sixth inning onwards. North Carolina catcher Colin Hynek hit a critical three-run home run in the eighth to seal the result.

The Rebels, who won the national title in 2022, now find themselves in the loser’s bracket after providing 11 whiffs from starter Taylor Rabe earlier in the contest.

Oklahoma and Georgia take control of Saturday bracket play

The action shifted on Saturday, June 13, as Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgia earned comfortable victories. Oklahoma defeated No. 7 Alabama 9-0 in the afternoon game, holding the Crimson Tide scoreless in their first return to Omaha since 1999. In the evening session, No. 3 Georgia overcame No. 6 Texas with a 7-1 result.

The matchup drew a massive crowd of 25,002 spectators, highlighting the intense interest in this year’s tournament.

These early results mean Oklahoma and Georgia will meet on Monday, June 15, at 6:00 PM CT to decide who remains undefeated in the second bracket. Texas and Alabama, meanwhile, face an elimination scenario when they meet at 1:00 PM CT on Monday.

For Texas, this is their 39th appearance in Omaha, a record that dwarfs the rest of the field, yet they must now navigate the difficult path through the loser’s bracket to stay alive.

The rise in competition levels in Omaha reflects wider trends in major American sports. Just as professional forecasts favor high-market MLB teams for their depth, the resource-heavy programs in the SEC have successfully occupied more than half the 2026 CWS bracket.

This dominance followed a Super Regional stage that saw a 31% year-over-year increase in viewership, with an average of 608,000 fans tuning in per game.

Confirmed scores and upcoming schedule for the 2026 series

The tournament continues with a busy schedule of non-elimination and survival games. All games are being broadcast on ESPN, with the second championship series game moving to ABC. Below is the confirmed schedule with results as of Sunday, June 14:

  • Friday, June 12: No. 16 West Virginia 7, Troy 5
  • Friday, June 12: No. 5 North Carolina 6, Ole Miss 2
  • Saturday, June 13: Oklahoma 9, No. 7 Alabama 0
  • Saturday, June 13: No. 3 Georgia 7, No. 6 Texas 1
  • Sunday, June 14: Troy vs. Ole Miss (1:00 PM CT)
  • Sunday, June 14: No. 16 West Virginia vs. No. 5 North Carolina (6:00 PM CT)
  • Monday, June 15: Loser Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4 (1:00 PM CT)
  • Monday, June 15: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4 (6:00 PM CT)
  • Tuesday, June 16: Winner Game 5 vs. Loser Game 6 (1:00 PM CT)
  • Tuesday, June 16: Winner Game 7 vs. Loser Game 8 (7:00 PM CT)

Troy and Ole Miss face elimination in Sunday showdown

Sunday’s early matchup features a desperate battle between the Troy Trojans and the Ole Miss Rebels. This elimination game is particularly poignant for Troy, who are making their first historical appearance in Omaha but must win to avoid an early exit.

Catcher Jimmy Janicki remains a central figure for the Trojans, having hit his 20th home run of the season on Friday to set a new school record with 86 RBIs in a single year.

The winner of the Troy and Ole Miss game will move on to Tuesday’s Game 9, where they will face the loser of the North Carolina-West Virginia clash. Historically, surviving multiple elimination games in Omaha requires deep pitching rotations and technical precision. Much like the com/latest-sport-news-updates-miami-open-aintree-world-cup/”>focused discipline required for international events, any lapse in fielding or base-running at Charles Schwab Field can end a season instantly.

Championship series and final bracket outlook

Following the conclusion of double-elimination play, the final two teams will enter a best-of-three Championship Series. Game 1 of the finals is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, at 7:00 PM CT. The series will continue on Sunday, June 21, at 1:30 PM CT on ABC, with a potential Game 3 scheduled for Monday, June 22, at 6:00 PM CT if necessary.

North Carolina and West Virginia enter Sunday night both looking to secure a 2-0 start. West Virginia’s Armani Guzman provided one of the tournament’s most memorable moments so far on Friday, recording a straight steal of home in the first inning. It was the first such play in Omaha since 2000.

As the temperature and stakes rise, the winner of this Sunday night battle will put themselves in a prime position to reach next weekend’s national final.
