Renowned boxing trainer Robert Garcia has cast a bold prediction for the heavyweight division, stating that David Benavidez would defeat Oleksandr Usyk if the pair meet in the coming years. Robert Garcia, speaking in interviews with ESNEWS and YSM Sports Media, suggested that the timeline for such a clash favors the younger fighter.

The veteran trainer indicated that while the bout would be difficult, he believes the “Mexican Monster” has the tools to unseat the unified champion. Robert Garcia specifically noted that David Benavidez could get the better of Oleksandr Usyk if the fight takes place roughly two years from now, potentially around May 2028.

According to Robert Garcia, the primary factor in this shift is the advancing age of the Ukrainian champion. Oleksandr Usyk is already approaching 40, and the trainer believes a further 24 months of activity will lead to a natural physical decline that David Benavidez is perfectly positioned to exploit.

Robert Garcia cites Usyk performance as catalyst for prediction

The reasoning behind Robert Garcia’s assessment stems partly from Oleksandr Usyk’s recent outing against Rico Verhoeven. While the heavyweight champion secured a victory, Robert Garcia admitted he was not impressed by the display, noting it was not the level of performance he typically expects from the pound-for-pound star.

“It wasn’t one of those performances that I expected from Usyk,” Robert Garcia said when discussing the Verhoeven bout. This perceived dip in dominance has led the trainer to believe that David Benavidez should skip secondary heavyweights like Frank Sanchez and target the champion directly after settling into higher weight classes.

Robert Garcia argued that David Benavidez “has no business” fighting Frank Sanchez because he lacks the star power required for such a high-risk transition. Instead, he urged the American to focus on the ultimate prize, saying he believes David Benavidez is capable of winning even if it is not an easy task.

David Benavidez remains cautious regarding heavyweight move

Despite the high praise from Robert Garcia, David Benavidez has maintained a more grounded outlook on his immediate future. As of March 2026, the fighter stated he was not thinking about the heavyweight division anytime soon, preferring to focus on his current weight obligations before moving up.

The strategic patience shown by David Benavidez is common among elite athletes who carefully time their weight jumps to ensure they remain competitive. This methodical approach to career longevity is similar to how Makhachev targets two-division glory in the UFC by selecting the right windows for title challenges.

For now, David Benavidez is expected to either remain in the cruiserweight division for further seasoning or return to light-heavyweight. Robert Garcia suggested that with two or three more fights at cruiserweight, the American would be fully prepared for the physical demands of the heavyweight elite.

Boxing world monitors Oleksandr Usyk’s future plans

The heavyweight landscape remains complex as Oleksandr Usyk weighs his next moves following the Rico Verhoeven fight. While Robert Garcia focuses on a two-year window, the current champion’s longevity remains the central question for every potential challenger in the top tier of the sport.

Maintaining such a high level of performance late into a career requires immense discipline and a bit of luck with injuries. This type of long-term planning is a hallmark of major sporting events, much like the logistical hurdles faced during World Cup 2026 planning which requires years of foresight.

If David Benavidez can maintain his current momentum while Oleksandr Usyk continues to age, the “Mexican Monster” may find the opening Robert Garcia has predicted. Whether the fight actually materializes by 2028 depends on the promotional landscape and David Benavidez’s success in his next few cruiserweight outings.
