Captain Shubman Gill will lead a transitioning Indian side against Afghanistan in a one-off Test match starting June 6, 2026, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The encounter marks India’s first appearance in the longest format since November 2025 and serves as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

While the match is not part of the current World Test Championship cycle, it provides a vital platform for new talent as senior figures like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested from the squad.

The squad announcement on May 19 confirmed a notable change in the leadership hierarchy. KL Rahul has been named vice-captain for this fixture, replacing Rishabh Pant in the deputy role. India’s selection reflects a clear eye on the future, featuring maiden Test call-ups for Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar, and Harsh Dubey.

This youth-oriented approach mirrors strategic reshapes seen in other major sports where technical drills and fresh energy are prioritized during periods of change.

The venue itself adds a layer of history to the match. Mullanpur’s Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium will become the 31st venue in India to host a Test. Match play is scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM IST daily throughout the five-day window. For fans in India, the action will be broadcast on the Star Sports Network and streamed via the JioHotstar platform.

Sai Sudharsan set for number three role

One of the most significant tactical shifts involves the structure of the top order. With Virat Kohli absent from the squad, captain Shubman Gill is expected to move to the number four position. This shift leaves a vacancy at number three, which looks set to be filled by Sai Sudharsan.

Reports from the team’s preparation indicate the “thinktank” views Sudharsan as the primary option to anchor the innings between the openers and the captain.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and vice-captain KL Rahul are predicted to open the batting, providing a mix of explosive intent and red-ball experience. Behind the wickets, Rishabh Pant appears likely to resume his duties as the primary wicketkeeper despite the strong recent form of Dhruv Jurel.

There is a possibility that Jurel could still feature in the starting XI as a specialist batter at number six, which would significantly deepen the middle order.

The selection of bowling all-rounders is another key area of focus. Washington Sundar, the most experienced Test all-rounder in the current squad, is a near-certain starter. He is expected to partner Nitish Kumar Reddy, though Harsh Dubey has also been mentioned as a potential debutant.

These players allow the team to maintain balance while testing the depth of the national reserves in the absence of veteran spinners. Such squad experiments are common as major sporting developments often force teams to look at the next generation of talent.

Siraj to lead pace attack without Bumrah

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who was granted full rest for workload management, Mohammed Siraj will head the pace department. Siraj is expected to be joined by Prasidh Krishna as the second primary seamer. Sources suggest the duo may be the preferred pairing given their familiarity and recent shared workload.

However, uncapped Gurnoor Brar remains a dark horse for selection if the Mullanpur pitch offers enough pace and bounce to warrant a third specialist quick.

The spin attack will revolve around Kuldeep Yadav. As India’s premier wrist-spinner, Yadav’s role will be critical on a surface expected to offer assistance to slow bowlers as the match progresses. If conditions appear particularly dry, the management may opt for a third spinner, potentially handing a debut to Manav Suthar or Harsh Dubey to complement the variety offered by Sundar and Yadav.

Afghanistan enters this contest under the leadership of Hashmatullah Shahidi, seeking to improve on their previous red-ball outing, which ended in an innings defeat to Zimbabwe. This is only the second Test match between the two nations since the first encounter in 2018. Just as com/nba-expansion-seattle-vegas-approved-2026-update/”>leagues like the NBA expand into new markets, this Test match represents an important step in globalizing the format and testing Afghanistan’s growing depth in the multi-day game.

Afghanistan’s predicted lineup remains unofficial but is expected to feature experienced campaigners like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azmatullah Omarzai. The Times of India suggests a XI including Afsar Zazai as wicketkeeper and Qais Ahmad as the primary spin threat.

India will be eager to bounce back following their 2-0 series defeat against South Africa in November 2025, using this fixture to rebuild momentum for the 2026 international season.
