Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that Lamine Yamal is fit to feature in the national team’s World Cup 2026 opener against Cape Verde, despite concerns following an injury the teenager sustained back in April.

The Barcelona forward was left out of last week’s warm-up friendly against Peru as a precaution but has since joined the squad in what the coaching staff describes as “perfect condition.”

The Group H clash marks the beginning of Spain’s campaign as they look to build on their Euro 2024 success from two years ago. While Yamal is a focal point for the team with 25 caps to his name, Luis de la Fuente indicated that the player may not be ready for a full shift.

The manager clarified that although the medical staff has cleared him, he will likely play limited minutes rather than the full 90.

Spain enters the match as heavy favourites against a Cape Verde side ranked 67th in the world. This disparity may allow the technical staff to manage their star assets cautiously. Managing such high-profile talent is a common theme in the sport, much like how Mohamed Salah faces a career-defining choice at a pivotal stage of his professional journey.

During his pre-match press conference, Luis de la Fuente addressed the status of several players who are expected to drive the Spanish offense. He confirmed that Nico Williams and Victor Muñoz are currently available alongside Yamal. The manager noted that while they are ready for selection, the internal “process” for these players means some may not participate in the entire game against Cape Verde.

“The good news is that Lamine is in perfect condition,” de la Fuente told reporters. He explained that the player arrived at the tournament in the specific state the coaching staff had targeted. The doctors have reportedly given the green light for the forward to play “some minutes” if the game demands it, ensuring his recovery from the April injury is not compromised.

The synergy between the players appears to be a point of optimism for the Spanish camp. Just as Luke Littler leads technical drills to foster squad cohesion in other disciplines, de la Fuente highlighted the strong professional relationship between Nico Williams and Yamal. The pair has spent significant time working together in training sessions leading up to the Group H opener.

Barcelona domestic success provides momentum for Spain

Yamal arrives at the World Cup following a highly productive domestic season with Barcelona. The teenager helped the Catalan club secure their second consecutive La Liga title, finishing eight points clear of Real Madrid. His individual contribution was substantial, recording 24 goals and 18 assists across 45 appearances in all competitions for his club.

This level of form is expected to carry over into European football news headlines as the tournament progresses. However, the immediate focus remains on navigating the opening match safely. With Cape Verde appearing as World Cup debutants, Spain has the luxury of being able to rotate their lineup to protect players who have completed a demanding league calendar.

The tactical approach for the match likely involves high possession to tire the Cape Verde defense. If Spain struggles to break the deadlock, the availability of Yamal and Williams off the bench provides de la Fuente with elite options to change the game. The medical team will continue to monitor the teenager’s workload to ensure he remains viable for the knockout stages.
