FC Barcelona have reportedly submitted a €80 million opening offer to Manchester City for defender Josko Gvardiol, testing the resolve of a club currently navigating a period of significant transition. The 24-year-old Croatian international is preparing for his second World Cup as Croatia faces England in their opening fixture of the 2026 tournament.

While City view Gvardiol as a vital part of their future, the concrete bid from Catalonia has arrived at a time when several senior figures are moving on from the Etihad Stadium.

The interest in the versatile defender comes amid a wider reshuffle for the Premier League champions following manager Pep Guardiola’s announcement that he is leaving the club after a decade in charge.

This leadership change coincides with reports that long-serving squad members John Stones and Bernardo Silva both called time on their City careers at the end of the recent campaign.

While these exits leave the squad in a state of flux, City remain firm in their stance that Gvardiol is under contract and they are under no pressure to sell the player.

Gvardiol, who was named Manchester City Player of the Season in 2025, remains a high priority for Hansi Flick as the Barcelona manager looks to bolster his defensive ranks. The €80 million proposal suggests that personal terms would not be an obstacle, though any deal is unlikely to progress until after the World Cup concludes.

Much like how Salah faces a career defining choice at Liverpool, Gvardiol must now weigh the allure of a new challenge in La Liga against his role in Manchester.

Barcelona faces stiff competition for Josko Gvardiol

Catalonia is not the only destination being linked with the Croatian international this summer. Real Madrid have reportedly identified the star as a potential solution for their left-back position, where they are also considering Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori.

Bayern Munich are also said to be monitoring the situation as they seek defensive reinforcements, creating a potential bidding war between three of Europe’s most powerful clubs for the €70m-rated defender.

Despite the mounting interest, Manchester City hold a strong hand in negotiations. Gvardiol joined the club from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a fee of €90 million (£77 million) and still has two years remaining on his current contract. The club has already shown it can handle high-stakes recruitments, having watched as com/manchester-united-100m-transfer-agreement-analysis-2026/”>Manchester United secure a £100m deal to fix their own defensive line, and would likely demand a significant premium to even consider a sale.

Squad overhaul continues under the Manchester City hierarchy

The potential departure of Gvardiol would add to a growing list of concerns for City’s recruitment team. With Nathan Ake and Omar Marmoush also reportedly linked with moves away, the club faces the task of replacing several key components of their title-winning machinery.

If Gvardiol were to leave, it would represent the loss of a player who was instrumental in the 2024 Premier League title win and a rare defensive talent capable of playing across the backline.

And while the €80 million offer from Barcelona is substantial, it falls short of the record-breaking fee City paid to bring him to England just three years ago. Given his age and status as a World Cup bronze medalist from Qatar 2022, his valuation remains near the top of the global market.

For now, the defender is focused on international duty as Croatia prepares for a group stage that could define their tournament ambitions.

Hansi Flick targeting defensive stability in Catalonia

Hansi Flick’s interest in Gvardiol is driven by the player’s technical proficiency and ability to adapt to high-possession systems. The Barcelona hierarchy is reportedly eager to secure the deal early to avoid the price inflation that often follows a strong performance at a major tournament.

If Gvardiol excels in the 2026 World Cup, his market value could quickly exceed the €80 million currently on the table.

The situation remains fluid as the summer transfer window progresses. While latest sport news updates on the World Cup 2026 will dominate the headlines in the coming weeks, the battle for Gvardiol’s signature will likely continue in the background.

City fans are left to wait and see if the club can withstand the pressure from Spain or if Gvardiol will become the next major departure in a summer defined by change.
