Ilia Topuria refuses handshake with Justin Gaethje over family insults
UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria vows to refuse a handshake with Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 following personal insults regarding his divorce.

UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria confirmed on Tuesday he will refuse to shake the hand of Justin Gaethje following their unification bout at UFC Freedom 250 this Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Speaking during a media scrum, the champion stated that personal insults directed at his family and his recent divorce have permanently damaged his respect for the interim titleholder.

The high-stakes clash, set for a custom-built Octagon on the South Lawn of the White House, has devolved into a bitter grudge match that Ilia Topuria vows to end with a cold first-round knockout.

The animosity reached a breaking point after UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje reportedly referenced Ilia Topuria’s split from his ex-wife, Giorgina Uzcategui, during promotional interviews. While the two fighters initially approached the “UFC White House” event with professional curiosity, the rhetoric has shifted from athletic competition to a personal vendetta.

Ilia Topuria made it clear that while he once planned to show sportsmanship regardless of the outcome, that offer is now off the table.

And the tension is not limited to the fighters themselves. Ilia Topuria also took aim at comments attributed to Justin Gaethje’s father, John Ray, who reportedly called the champion a “short guy” and predicted a dominant win for his son.

Such personal friction adds significant weight to a fight that already carries the prestige of a unified crown, much like how Makhachev targets two-division glory in his own upcoming high-stakes title defense.

Ilia Topuria explains the complete loss of respect

“I always had the desire to knock him out,” Ilia Topuria told reporters during Tuesday’s media session. He explained that his original plan involved a traditional show of respect after the final bell. “But this time, it’s not going to be like that. I’m not going to show him any respect.”

The champion noted that Justin Gaethje crossed a fundamental line by bringing family matters into the pre-fight buildup.

Specifically, Ilia Topuria addressed the comments regarding his marriage, stating that even if they are no longer together, Giorgina Uzcategui remains the mother of his daughter. He argued that respecting someone’s mother is a “basic code in life” that his opponent failed to uphold.

This development mirrors the intense scrutiny often found in top-tier sports, whether it is Salah facing a career defining choice or a martial artist defending his family honor.

But Justin Gaethje has not backed down from his stance. The interim champion has labeled his opponent a “gimmick” and an “annoying little bastard” who carries an unearned ego. Justin Gaethje maintains that he never said anything personal about Topuria’s wife and that the champion is merely being emotional during the stress of fight week.

He claimed Ilia Topuria “thinks he’s a God” and “smells his own farts.”

The role of family in the UFC Freedom 250 buildup

The involvement of John Ray, Justin Gaethje’s father, served as further fuel for the fire. Ilia Topuria recounted an incident where the elder Gaethje reportedly insulted his height while holding a beer. The champion promised that after the fight, he will look at Gaethje’s father and ask who the “short one” is while his son lies on the canvas.

Justin Gaethje dismissed these accusations as the champion being “insufferable” and “emotional” during fight week. He noted that fighters are naturally “vulnerable” when it comes to the pressure of a main event, though he reiterated that he finds Ilia Topuria’s public persona exhausting. For Justin Gaethje, the fight remains about proving that the champion is human once he “touches his chin” on Sunday night.

Logistics and viewing for the historic White House event

The event, officially known as UFC Freedom 250, features a unique logistical setup on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C. Unlike traditional pay-per-view events, this card will be broadcast exclusively on Paramount+.

Fans will need a subscription to the streaming service to catch the main card, which is scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT on June 14.

Security concerns have limited the live audience at the White House to an invite-only crowd of roughly 3,000 to 5,000 people. This group will largely consist of military members and administration guests. However, the UFC has organized a massive viewing area at the nearby Ellipse Park.

This area can hold up to 85,000 fans and will feature large screens and a “Fan Fest” beginning on June 13.

  • Main Event: Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje (Lightweight Title Unification)
  • Date: Sunday, June 14, 2026
  • Broadcaster: Paramount+ (Subscription required, no PPV fee)
  • Press Conference: Lincoln Memorial, Friday at 8:00 PM ET
  • Official Weigh-ins: Expected to take place at the Lincoln Memorial

As the “Fan Fest” at The Ellipse prepares to host a Zac Brown Band concert on Saturday, the focus remains firmly on the main event. Ilia Topuria has promised to “cut down” Justin Gaethje “like a tree.”

Whether the champion can deliver on his first-round knockout prediction or if Justin Gaethje can pull off the upset, the post-fight scene is guaranteed to lack the usual displays of mutual respect.
