Sergio Castillo struck a 38-yard walk-off field goal on the final play to lift the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 30-28 victory over the Calgary Stampeders on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The Blue Bombers secured the win in their 2026 CFL season opener at McMahon Stadium after trailing by one point with just 64 seconds remaining on the clock. Quarterback Zach Collaros directed the decisive drive, which appeared in front of 17,743 fans in Calgary.

The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Stampeders take a 21-16 lead into halftime. Winnipeg responded by tightening their defense and utilizing a balanced offensive attack led by running back Brady Oliveira. While the Stampeders outgained the visitors with 410 total yards to Winnipeg’s 359, the Blue Bombers’ efficiency in the red zone—converting three of four chances—proved vital in the narrow result.

Calgary’s special teams faced a difficult night as kicker Jude McAtamney, filling in for the injured René Paredes, missed a crucial 45-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Had it been successful, the kick would have tied the game at 24-24. Instead, the miss left the door open for Castillo’s late-game heroics, where he finished the evening with 11 total kicking points.

Zach Collaros leads late comeback drive

Winnipeg began their final possession from a precarious position, needing to move into scoring range with just over a minute left. Zach Collaros remained calm under pressure, finding receiver Ontaria Wilson for a critical 27-yard gain. This precision passing loosened a Calgary defense that had surrendered very little in the final quarter.

Following the aerial gain, the Blue Bombers turned to their ground game to burn clock and improve field position. Brady Oliveira, who finished with 113 rushing yards on 15 carries, took two handoffs for a combined 13 yards. This sequence allowed offensive coordinator Tommy Condell to set the ball up for Sergio Castillo at a manageable distance for the game-winner.

The intensity of the late-game drama mirrored the pressure seen in high-stakes professional sports globally, from athletes chasing multi-division glory to teams fighting for season-opening momentum. Sergio Castillo’s 38-yard strike as time expired ensured the Blue Bombers started their campaign with a 1-0 record.

Brady Oliveira and offense drive Winnipeg forward

While the walk-off kick grabbed the headlines, Brady Oliveira was the engine of the Winnipeg offense throughout the night. He supplemented his 113 rushing yards with three receptions for 24 yards, totaling 137 yards from scrimmage. His physical running style was particularly effective on the final drive, helping the team navigate the closing seconds.

Zach Collaros finished the night with 17 completions on 28 attempts for 233 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His favorite targets included Tim White, who recorded five catches for 60 yards and a score, and Ontaria Wilson, whose 27-yard grab was arguably the most impactful play of the night. Winnipeg’s offensive unit remained disciplined, committing only five penalties for 43 yards.

Calgary’s Vernon Adams Jr. produced a statistically impressive performance in the loss, throwing for 239 yards and a touchdown while adding 48 yards and a score on the ground. Running back Dedrick Mills was also prolific, finishing with 112 rushing yards. However, Mills was largely neutralized in the second half, held to just 17 yards after racking up 95 in the opening two quarters.

Defensive stand and impact players at McMahon Stadium

Defensive lineman Jake Ceresna was a primary disruptor for the Blue Bombers, tallying three sacks and five tackles. His ability to pressure Vernon Adams Jr. slowed the Calgary offense in the third quarter, which saw the Stampeders fail to put points on the board. Middle linebacker Tony Jones also played a pivotal role, leading the Winnipeg defense with eight tackles.

The Stampeders had to contend with the absence of key starters, including defensive linemen Folarin Orimolade and Jaylon Hutchings. These gaps in the roster forced a higher reliance on the remaining depth. Much like football clubs reshaping their defensive depth with high-value signings, the Stampeders are finding that health at the line of scrimmage is paramount to protecting late leads.

The victory provides Mike O’Shea with a strong foundation as the season moves into its second week. For Winnipeg, the focus will remain on the health and form of their core veterans. The Stampeders, now 0-1, must regroup after a “wild” opening night that saw victory snatched away in the final seconds of regulation.
