The 2024 Wyoming High School Tennis season is in full swing. The first practice was on August 12 for all 16 teams. The first contest will be on August 17. The season is seven weeks leading up to state in Gillette from September 26 to 28. Regionals will occur at Natrona County High School for the North and the South is heading to Green River.
Cheyenne Central girls’ won the team title in 2023. To defend their championship, the Indians will be led by Hailey Mathis-Breitkpof (#2 singles champion), Cailyn Smedley (part of #1 doubles champions), and all-staters Crimson Flowers and Lucia Shoemaker. Laramie returns six players in their lineup after finishing 3rd last year, including three all-staters and all but one doubles player. You can never count out Kelly Walsh as they look to reload for the 2024 season. Thunder Basin is another team to keep an eye on, as they return two all-state players, Ellie Garcia and Emme Kendrick.
Laramie will have a tough time defending their boys’ title as they lost all but the three-time all-state No. 1 singles player Paulo Mellizo and their No. 3 doubles team. Runner-up Cheyenne Central also lost a lot with 9 players having graduated. Sheridan might be one of the strongest contenders bringing back two returning all-state doubles players in Ben Bujans (2nd place in #1 doubles) and Shaw Walker (2nd place in #2 doubles), and last year’s #2 singles player Sean Brown (who finished 4th). Cheyenne East could be a team to watch throughout the season. The T-Birds bring back three all-state players including Colin Crecelius at #1 singles (who finished 4th), and their #3 runner-up doubles team of Kaden Sutherland and Kale Peterson.

The first scoreboard of the season will be posted on Friday, Aug 16.
