ASHTABULA — In a recent upgrade to local recreational facilities, the tennis court formerly located at Harbor Topky Library is being relocated to Smith Field.
The move also included the installation of a new basketball court at the site.
“We are using funds from our allocation grant and our parks levy to construct a basketball court and tennis court,” said City Manager Jim Timonere. “The tennis court currently next to the Harbor Topky Library will be moved to Smith Field, and the area will become two more pickleball courts permanently on Walnut Boulevard.”
Harbor Topky Library Director Joe Zappitello said he thinks it’s a good idea, because the pickleball courts are used much more than the tennis court.
“We are also doing some resurfacing to the walking track,” Timonere said. “We have already completed improved drainage to the baseball field.”
The new courts at Smith Field are aimed at increasing community engagement and recreational activity.
Local schools and organizations will be able to utilize the new spaces for sports events and community gatherings.
The project will be completed by the end of August.
