EJ Rowland, who helped Bourg-en-Bresse in France to the postseason this past year, will turn in his high-tops for a whistle after accepting a basketball coaching position at St. Mary’s in Moraga.
Having completed his 19th season playing professional basketball, the 6-foot-3 Palma prodigy will join Randy Bennett’s staff at St. Mary’s. Rowland was a point guard for Bennett when the Gaels reached the NCAA Tournament in 2004.
Brought in to provide depth at the point guard position for Bourg-en-Bresse, Rowland, 40, averaged 17 minutes a game, scoring 5.8 points while handing out just under three assists a night.
Rowland’s career, which has taken him all over the world, has included numerous honors, having been inducted into the VTB United League Hall of Fame in Russia in 2019. In 2013, he was the VTB United League MVP and scoring champion.
In 2023, Rowland averaged 15.2 points for GTK Gliwice in Poland at the age of 39, the second highest total in his career, while doling out a career high 7.9 assists a night.
The one-time Hartnell College sharpshooter has played professionally in Russia, Turkey, Italy, Israel, Spain, Germany, Australia, Poland and France.
