High-end ‘car condos’ set for development near Barber Motorsports Park

More development is on the way near Barber Motorsports Park.

What appears as a property rezoning opens the door to a unique development.

The Birmingham City Council approved rezoning industrial land next to the park to recreational.

The new project will be condominium homes, but it will not look like any condo you’ve probably visited. They will feature indoor space for vehicles.

The 105-unit facility will be located on Rex Lake Road.

The high-end garages will each be about 1200 square feet, enough space for those serious about automobiles to have a safe and secure place to store and show off their rides and enjoy some comfort away from the track.

Members of the Birmingham City Council see this as a complement to the race track.

“I think this is really going to work well, and it’s exciting for us too because the city of Birmingham invested quite a bit in opening up this piece of property and getting it ready for development and to my knowledge this will be the first development on the site,” said Councilman Darrell O’Quinn.

One concern addressed early in the discussion was that these condos will be owned instead of rented. They are also prohibited from being turned into short term rentals.

“Because we have car enthusiasts investing large amounts of money to put their cars at this facility, what we don’t want is a large turnover of renters, and we’re going to let people behind the security,” said developer Ray Roll.

The car condos will be built in two phases: the first will include 51 units, the second will be 54-units.

We recently we reported that Leeds investing in housing and retail development just off of the interstate, so quite a bit of change near the track is expected in the next few years.
