Mooresville has its basketball coach.
The Mooresville school board approved former Plainfield basketball star and longtime Quakers assistant Gavin Groninger as the boys basketball coach Tuesday night.
Groninger set a school record at Plainfield with 1,768 career points — a mark that still stands — and led the Quakers to a Class 3A state championship in 1998-99 as he was voted Mr. Basketball runner-up and an Indiana All-Star as a senior. Groninger went on to play four seasons at Michigan, where he was a team captain and started 30 games over four seasons, averaging 4.9 points per game.

Groninger was an assistant on the Plainfield staff for the past 12 years for coach Andy Weaver, helping the Quakers to eight consecutive winning seasons and a Class 4A regional championship appearance in 2020-21. Groninger, who taught physical education at Bridgeport Elementary School for the past 12 years, will serve as Mooresville’s career coach, a new position which helps students through Indiana’s recently adopted graduation pathway process.
Shabaz Khaliq resigned as Mooresville’s coach in late July. He was 35-34 in three seasons, including a 10-14 mark last season.
Groninger and wife Megan have four children: daughters Charlee, Indee, and Millee and son Henry.
