Mill Valley’s Gus Grumet lived up to his billing as the top seed, winning the USTA 16 National Championship in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Sunday.
Grumet defeated Granite Bay’s Arin Pallegar in three sets, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (2) in Sunday’s final to win the tournament.
Grumet also needed three sets to take down No. 6 seed Keaton Hance in Saturday’s semifinals, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Grumet, who plays for University High in San Francisco, earns an automatic bid into the U.S. Open Junior Boys main draw, which is set to begin on Sept. 1. Grumet also won the USTA Boys 16 Clay Court National Championships in Delray Beach, Fla. earlier this summer.
Pacifics fall
The San Rafael Pacifics, facing a must-win scenario in Game 2 of the Pecos League Championship Series against the Alpine Cowboys, staged a late rally but ultimately fell 12-10 on Sunday night.
The Pacifics trailed 11-5 going into the eighth inning but scored four times in the frame to give themselves a chance. San Rafael added one more runs in the ninth but would get no closer.
Mark Hernandez drove in four runs and John Bicos drove in two for San Rafael. The Pacifics allowed 10 hits, 11 walks and 11 earned runs in the first six innings.
Alpine scored three runs in the second inning and four more in the third to take a 7-2 lead. The Cowboys, who secured their first Pecos League title since 2019, scored two more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth against the defending champion Pacifics.
